Hi Lisa,
Great question! Wow, those are two drastically different businesses, but the thing is, my answer is the same for both. To have the most efficient, effective and strategic marketing program for success, you definitely need to know the inner workings of your prioritized target customers. There are a lot of variable sometimes, but big picture, who is the customer that greatly needs your product/service most and who is easiest to reach? Knowing that there's a population of people that need what you create is key and then knowing their demographics and psychographics as well as what they do from when they wake up to when they go to bed allows you to try and figure out where your customers are hanging out so you can find places to be so they can learn about you.

So to answer your question, first and foremost, know who your target customers are and if they want/need your product/service...that is the first step and then you can determine what you need to do to create and build a business. It sure does help to know your customer before you invest time and money into something that will be the basis of your life. Knowing your customer will influence just about every business decision going forward too.

I hope this helps you, good luck! Just let me know if you have questions or need help.
